Let's talk about down there......

In my 20 years of actively working with clients as an LMT, yoga teacher and fitness professional, we NEVER talked about our vaginas, pelvic floors or womb spaces other than telling women to avoid inversions when menstrating. I honestly was pretty clueless about the muscles of the pelvic floor until I had a baby and tore several of those muscles! Yet with every single breath we take our pelvic floor is very involved. The sling of muscles which make up our PF literally are the base of our torso holding everything in. So why don't we talk about it more? Simple answer...the damn patriarchy!

Peeing when you sneeze or jump is common but is NOT normal. Chronic lower back or hip pain also common but not normal. Both are signs of pelvic floor dysfunction. See the pic below with more common symptoms.

I did a deep dive into statistics on pelvic floor dysfunction in women: Which BTW men can have PF issues as can teens. It's not just a postpartum thing.

* 30-35% of women in the U.S.A. experience pelvic floor dysfunction.

* 80% of women will give birth, 30% will experience PF dysfunction and 70% of those women will NEVER talk about their pelvic floor issues so they won't receive treatment.

So let's start talking about down there! Look at your amazing pelvic floor muscles.

If you want to learn how to feel your PF, through contracting and releasing it, watch this video.

I always recommend seeing a PF PT and working with trained folks like me who know the anatomy and techniques to train for a healthy PF. If you need a recommendation for a PT, reach out I have so many :)
