Have you ever been in a yoga class where the teacher says to relax your jaw while you are doing a hip stretch? If you have given birth you may have also (well hopefully you were) told to relax your jaw and throat to help your cervix open. I know why and want you to know why! It's insanely cool and can be very helpful for those working on pelvic floor issues.
During fetal development these two orifices of the genitals and the mouth develop around the same time and are connected with very prominent neural pathways. The shape and direction of the muscles and tissues are also very similar (see images below).
Now we also have to talk about internal pressure. You might be familiar with your pelvic floor & diaphragm connection but the third diaphragm pressure controller is in our jaw and throat. Holding tension in our jaw and throat cause more pressure in our pelvic floor. Just like any other neural pathway in our body the more we focus our energy the smoother and better functioning that pathway becomes. For my ladies working with pelvic floor issues do you know if you tend to be hypertonic in your PF? Reminder chronic tight muscles are usually also weak muscles because they don't have proper range of motion. FYI, Sneeze pee, queefing, pain with sex and chronic tailbone or hip pain can be some, but not nearly all the signs of a hypertonic pelvic floor.
Experience for yourself the connection with these 2 techniques:
